Christine Lee in Politics

Your Opinion Counts!

worktogether.jpgThis website highlights Christine Lee's campaign to encourage the Chinese community to get interested and involved in politics. How the country is governed and which laws are passed affect all of us that live, work and study in the UK.

Through this site we aim to make the government aware of the Chinese community's needs so that we too can be considered and, better still, be part of the decision making process.

New Rules Challenges Chinese Community

Recent wholesale changes to the Immigration Rules, announced by the Government, have caused widespread concern amongst the UK Chinese Community. Characteristically reserved and silent, the Chinese Community has largely been ignored by Government. However following a number of orchestrated, high profile raids of Chinese restaurants by the Border and Immigration Agency (BIA) and Police forces, there have been a number of demonstrations and protest marches by various Chinese Community groups since October 2007.

As valuable contributors to the Treasury, the Chinese Community's needs should not be ignored. Foreign workers are key to the success of tens of thousands of restaurants and takeaways operating in Britain today.

What are the changes?

  • Overseas chefs seeking employment in the UK will be required to have achieved GCSE Level English before entry.

  • Chinese Takeaways will no longer be able to employ chefs from abroad, except for ‘specialist' requirements.

  • Low skilled jobs to be filled by EU workers only.

How does this affect you?

  • Virtually no chef will qualify for entry to the UK under this new rule.

  • Banning the employment of overseas chefs for takeaway businesses will mean loss of business or closure as standards drop to meet Government demands.

  • The definition of low skilled jobs includes chefs below Head and Second chef grade. This will affect the daily operations of all kitchens.
